It’s the month of mother appreciation! A time when we show our lovely mums just how important they are to us. Have you got something special planned for Mother’s Day? If your mum is an avid adventurer, why not arrange a trip to the iSimangaliso Wetland Park in St Lucia? There’s plenty to do and see if she has a love of nature and enjoys being out and about. Keep reading and we’ll show you. (Book your St Lucia accommodation through Vacation Letting.)

iSimangaliso Wetland Park activities Mum will love:

1. Hippo and crocodile cruise

All aboard! Invite Mum on a comfortable cruise along the St Lucia Estuary – home to Nile crocodiles and the largest hippos in South Africa. The cruise skippers are full of fun facts about the wetland and its many marvellous sights. And can teach you about more than just crocs and hippos! Ask them about the various park ecosystems and vast birdlife. The iSimangaliso Wetland Park is known for its amazing birds, many of which can be sighted on deck. Be sure to pack your camera and binoculars, as you might spot a Crowned Eagle, Secretary Bird or even the Pel’s Fishing Owl. Try some of these trusted vendors for the best hippo and crocodile cruises:

2. Sunset safari
What better way to celebrate Mother's Day than with a sunset safari? (And maybe the clinking of champagne glasses?) Sit back and relax as your game ranger drives you around the gorgeous iSimangaliso Wetland Park, and watch the colours of the sky slowly change from blue to rosy orange. The sunset sightings can be particularly spectacular as you have the opportunity to spot nocturnal animals like leopards and hyenas, along with rhinos, giraffes, elephants, buffalos, zebras, and warthogs. For more information, or to book for the iSimangaliso St Lucia Sunset Drive, click here. If you're lucky, you might even get to see some of the birds St Lucia is famous for, like flamingos and pelicans. So be sure to bring the camera along for this one.

3. Guided wildlife walk

For the more athletic mums, a guided walk through nature can be a memorable way to spend Mother’s Day. As we have mentioned, iSimangaliso Wetland Park is a haven for wildlife, with many natural ecosystems to explore. And when you’re on foot, these can be encountered in a more intimate way, making the tour an experience of a lifetime. Wander around the vast Lake St Lucia and spot hippos, crocs, pelicans and flamingos, and learn about how they feed, breed and generally live in this natural landscape. Witness blue wildebeest, zebras, impalas and waterbuck in action, and try your luck with more rare sightings, little grey duiker, reedbuck, and species of chameleon. It’s the perfect opportunity to become one with nature!
